The latest gun-grabber to be caught carrying one is Illinois State Sen. Donne Trotter of Chicago. Trotter, whose website touts his support for a state assault weapon ban (in a state that Armalite, DSA, Springfield Armory and other members of the trade call home), was caught with a .25 cal. Beretta pistol and six rounds of ammo in his carry-on luggage.
Trotter told the TSA he had worked late as a security guard and forgot he had the gun with him. That made no difference, of course, and he spent the night in the lockup.
Many observers had thought him the most likely candidate to get the Chicago Democratic machine’s backing for the congressional seat formerly held by Jesse Jackson, Jr., who resigned under an ethical cloud after the November election, citing bipolar syndrome. This incident probably opens the door for some of the other dozen or so Democrats who’ve expressed interest in the Jackson seat, though a fine concern with legalities has never been a hallmark of Chicago Democratic politics and Trotter could still easily get the nod.
It’s always a pleasure to see one of these characters hoist with his own petard, though we probably should keep the schadenfreude under control, since we always argue for mercy when some concealed carrier from Tennessee is caught with a gun in New York. Whether he does any time or not, he’s given us a moment of fun and demonstrated our point.
