Feinstein: Back in the Gun Control Battle

Former San Francisco mayor and California Senator Dianne Feinstein told California delegates at the Democratic National Convention she intends to reengage on the gun issue, with special emphasis on “assault weapons.”

Feinstein earned special infamy among gunowners with a 1995 60 Minutes interview in which she said, “If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them—Mr. and Mrs. America, turn ‘em all in, I would have done it.”

That comment probably sold a million AR-15s, and the fact that Feinstein and other Democrats think there’s productive ground for them in trying to ban black guns shows how little they understand the current gun market.

I’ve talked to a lot of SGN advertisers about it, and the consensus is that there are at least four times as many ARs in private hands today as there were in 1994, the last time Feinstein and her kind tried to outlaw them. I would assume that the growth in AKs, FALs and other guns that Feinstein doesn’t like has been proportional.

In 1994, there were perhaps a half-dozen companies making ARs and accessories. My guess is that there are somewhere between 100 and 200 firms making or assembling whole guns and probably 500 offering accessories.

Trying to ban guns in 1994 cost the Democratic Party control of the House for the first time since the 1950s. What will be the price of trying to ban them when many, many more people own them? The effort would be suicidal, but as the rural, conservative Democrat has become as extinct as the passenger pigeon, there’s no one around to moderate the Feinsteins, who will be prone to pander to the far-left party base.

Talleyrand said of the Bourbons, “they have learned nothing and they have forgotten nothing.” That perfectly sums up the Feinstein approach to this issue, which has been on the table for 25 years. The more noise the likes of Feinstein make about banning black rifles, the more will be sold.

They could have been banned quite easily in the early 1970s, when Colt was shipping maybe 600 a month, but the antis were fixated on “Saturday Night Specials” at that point. Today, ARs and other black rifles are the guns of the mainstream, and there will be no taking them away.

    An idiot elected by idiots.

    • C. Flores

Not all Californians are idiots, just the ones who continue to vote for her! I became a Life member of both the NRA and the California Rifle and Pistol Association after her actions caused the California legislature to put a handgun limitation law on the ballot.

I hope if I'm still alive when the revolution to take the power from the Oligarchs and return it to the people begins that the leader will have at least an AK. My pistols won't be enough. As for the anti's, what is it about prohibition-fail that you still don't understand?

Such a flattering picture, too! LOL!

she needs a coloring book and do something positive

I am a Democrat and I strongly disagree with her and other Democrat and Independent statements that we need more gun control and I'm not giving up my guns either. The Democrats are stuck with the extreme left, but you have to remember that the Republicans are stuck with the "Religious Right", the Tea Party, and Rush Limbaugh.

Lost, how fitting, the problem is you're stuck in the lifeboat with them, and they have the oars.

    • Jason

Um dude if your a Dem you should really not post on sites like this. Its the dems fault for well over half the gun laws now. In my opinoin Dems are ruining this great Country and in time will pay for their crimes. MOLON LABE

Gun rights should NEVER be a partisan issue, Jason. We will never win the day with Republicans alone. There's a LOT of Democrats who own guns and value their rights. Making silly allegations and alienating half of the population isn't constructive. We will prevail if we stick to facts, reason and logic and educate our friends regardless of party.

  • Jeff

Criminals do not buy guns they traffic them. Why not focus time on that and leave good Americans alone.

    • Will

Because I really don't think they want to do anything about crime. Huge industry to arrest, try, incarcerate, feed, house, clothe and otherwise care for the criminal element. Besides, criminals won't care about another law they will ignore, only the law-abiding citizen. And the more law-abiding citizens they can turn into defenseless victims, the better for the industry and greater job security for lawyers.

    38,000.00 a year to keep one inmate i a N.C. prison ….. what a wast of money…

Anybody out there know that Feinstein is one of the few in California with a CCW permit. She likes the right to defend HERSELF. Damned with the rest of us.

  • Randy

Dianne Feinstein has been a lifelong gun grabber. She has been seen carrying a weapon for self defense. It is people like her that are the cause of unrest. She and her cronies would love to see law abiding citizens disarmed. She would fit right in as a master to the slaves. Feinstein needs to go. Vote her out California. She is among one of the real dangers to the constitution of this country. She demands that my rights as a free tax paying American be set aside as a solution to crime. She should stop and think, if she is capable of that, criminals break the law. More gun laws mean more laws for them to break.
