Trayvon Martin: More Complicated

After several days of a nicely controlled media narrative depicting George Zimmerman as a cold-blooded vigilante killer who executed an innocent teenager in cold blood, the intrusion of facts made the Trayvon Martin case a lot more complicated this week.

First, Zimmerman’s side of the story started leaking out of the Sanford, Fla., police department, and it was that Martin attacked the neighborhood watchman, breaking his nose and banging his head on the pavement. Parts of his account were backed up by eyewitnesses.

It also came out that Martin was on suspension for a marijuana-related offense at his Miami-area school, and had previously had other minor scrapes with authority. While the first photo commonly released showed Martin as a young teenager, later pictures showed the 6-foot, 3-inch young man who encountered Zimmerman.

Martin’s mother trademarked slogans related to his name, presumably in preparation for licensing them to makers of T-shirts and other memorabilia.

To the surprise of no one, Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson turned up to support the Martin family and agitate for the arrest of Zimmerman. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg predictably used the occasion to call for more repressive gun laws.

The New Black Panthers offered a $10,000 bounty for Zimmerman, “dead or alive.” The watchman is now quite understandably in hiding.

Zimmerman is now apparently the first bearer of a new ethnic designation, “white Hispanic.” While the fact that people of Latin ancestry come in color schemes from Salma Hayek to Sammy Sosa is obvious to anyone with eyesight, that notion apparently has not been useful to the mainstream media before now. “White Hispanic” implies that Zimmerman was somehow more in the wrong than he would have been had he been from the Sosa end of the color spectrum, and I find that idea very pernicious.

One would have hoped we had cashiered the sort of 1890s thinking that gave us designations like octoroon, quadroon, mulatto, etc., but clearly we have not. Some figures of the 21 century are clearly as invested in  minutely detailed racial division as Theodore Bilbo or J.B. Stoner were in the last one.

The President wisely took what I regard as a statesmanlike approach to the issue, perhaps with a weather eye to the very sort of developments that have come up since he spoke. Newt Gingrich took a non-statesmanlike approach, and wound up looking like a bonehead.

So now we have all the required elements for a full-blown media and political circus, with positions hardening on all sides. What was a tragedy with many nuances has become a Punch-and-Judy show where human beings are reduced to caricatures. What a pity.

My guess is that Zimmerman comes out of this with no jail time, but with ruinous legal expenses and the need to look over his shoulder for months, if not years. If there’s anything to be gained from this case, it will be as a cautionary tale for some of our most exuberant concealed-carry advocates.

The lesson: we still haven’t invented a gun that can be unfired. When you pull that trigger, a whole lot of unforeseen consequences are about to unfold, “stand your ground” laws or not. I don’t doubt that whatever CCW class George Zimmerman attended emphasized the point, and he’s now better qualified than anyone to teach it himself.

  • Stan

Curious to see how all the folks who have already found Zimmerman guilty will spin this when all is said and done.

    • Jeepers Creepers

Instead of just a handgun the shooter could have armed himself with a stun gun or pepper spray.

  • Mike

Wow – surprised by the characterization of the current President's approach as statesmanlike. (I happen to disagree, but no matter.) Shotgun News' diversity of published viewpoints outstrips the NYT, in which rigid conformity is the norm.

    • drsique

Actually, I agree with you. In his usual narcissistic way, our President attempted to make the whole case about him and his imaginary son. Also, if Obama and Holder had not dismissed the voter intimidation case against the Black Panthers, maybe they wouldn't be so bold as to put a price on a mans head, also illegal. Nope, I can only point to one thing that Obama has done right, zap terrorists. But, isn't that a no brainer?

      • Ken

If zapping terrorists is a no brainer, Why couldn't "W' do it?

  • James Martinez

    To all the racist comments,

Please go back to stormfront.org and ect. and let the adults talk. Your racist and homophobic comments are beyond ignorant and moronic. If we are going to be for our rights as gun owners we need to be for all the rights of others. We CANNOT tread upon the right for gays to marry, nor the rights of any others. Your attacking of Muslims, African Americans, and homosexuals only hurts those for the second amendment. In my opinion I do not think race has much to play into this, nor do I think the fact that he killed the man with a firearm is a matter of importance. I think Zimmerman was a petty hateful person in general and he would have attacked anyone regardless of race. He would have attacked anyone with whatever weapon he had on him whether that have been a gun, knife, or ect. He was ready to abuse his power to the full extent he could get away with, and unfortunately he attacked Trayvon Martin. I think it is really depressing when anyone kills someone then hides behind concealed carry laws and castle doctrine (or whatever the case may be). All this behavior does is hurt those who use the law in the way it was supposed be. It is really a sickening set of events and I think nothing will be accomplished from acts such as Zimmerman's.

    • maingearinarkansas

Gosh, we wouldn't want to let facts or a thorough investigation stop you from making your noose for Zimmerman, now would we?

And certainly the Black Panthers (now guilty of terroristic threatening by calling out a bounty "dead or alive"), Sharpton, Jackson and their ilk could not possibly be racists, right?

As Bugs Bunny used to say… what a maroon.

    • Antonio

Homophobic comments, gay marriage, Muslims… did I miss something? You sure you're on the right page there, James?

      • RWHunnicutt

He was commenting on some now-deleted posts.

    • RAGBAG

Hey James. You sure you read this article? Not sure what you are responding to but it certainly isnt what I read. By the way, just because someone dissagrees with you doesnt make them racist, homophobic or hates Muslims. That is an ignorant argument by those not intellectual enough to articulate an intelligent response!

    • jim

homosexual behavior is simply that a behavior its not a race or creed i laugh when i hear word homophobic a phobia is be afraid of something because people dissaprove of certain behaviors doesnt make it a phobia but in a liberal mind it does but then most people know liberalism is a mental illness no where in constitution or admendments does it say anything aboput homosexual behavior is a right lol get a clue moron

    • Big Jim

When did you get to be included in an investigation that brought you your set of implied or recognized events in this case?? You are saying Zimmerman is guilty of something already. Who gives a crap about Gays to marry or muslims ! This specific issue has nothing to do with those folks. Thats another issue in and of itself.
Lets try and allow the justice system work before you convict Zimmerman. I was not there nor were you so dont act like you were!
I am a christian and follow the written word. A moral bond is between a man and a woman!
As a member of those who also carry a weapon day in and day out for various reasons, I know when and what is required for the use of my weapon. If I use it and am within those definitions and reasons then so be it. Let us wait and shut our mouths about this till its resolved through an investigation. We surely don't need to give Buttheads like the Black Panthers or the Rev's…(Idiots) more race track to spin their wheels on. I speaking for myself…am sick and tired of seeing their stupid faces and mouths running off whenever something happens that they think they can get more free press for themselves!!! What a joke they are.
The Law is the Law until replaced or re-peeled right? So let us all just sit back and allow it to work.

Black Panthers are like the Harlem Globetrotters…funny as hell to watch…….might have a different ending for them little boys and their pretty little berets! How cute anyway! They always need a path to follow as if anyone really cares about them at all. Really!

    • ken

Stalking and confronting an unarmed man, after being told to stand down by the police, makes Zimmerman the aggressor, and therefore a Murderer!

  • Brian H.

Maybe I'm just naive, but I'm perfectly happy to allow the police to run their investigation and announce their conclusion when they're done. If Zimmerman was not facing a credible threat to his life, then he should go to jail. Part of being an adult is taking responsibility for your actions. Getting your CCW and carrying a weapon is to voluntarily increase your responsibility for your actions. However, if the police do find that Mr. Zimmerman acted within the bounds of the law, then he shouldn't be jailed. As the author stated, he will be extremely qualified to teach the lesson about how "no bullet can be unfired".

As for Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the New Black Panthers, and everybody else who's trying throw around the race card…Stop. It's true that racism still exists to varying degrees in the hearts of many people, but I don't think that these guys are helping their cause at all. Nobody wants to hear a braying jackass, even if he's right.

I just hope that justice is served, regardless of what that outcome may be.

  • blacks are racists

Al [not so] Sharptons infinite wisdom…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqQe4KOrvsM

    What an ignorant dolt.

  • White Hispanic

This just shows how blatantly racist Sharpton and Jackson are, not to mention the media whores they've become. As so-called religious and political figures they don't stand up for whites, Asians, Hispanics, or Native Indians who have been criminalized — and there are plenty of us — only blacks. And they don't even confront black-on-black crime, which is the biggest threat to black youth. What hypocrisy. These cowardly men and their ideals are skewed and outdated, and because of their extremism they're doing the kind damage to race relations that will take decades to resolve.

  • Al R

Treyvon also was caught at school with a screwdriver and 12 items of women's jewlery, boasted about punching a bus driver, three times suspended from school, last time caught with a baggie with pot residue and a pipe; was he dealing? Family closed his Facebook site as can be done after death of F.B. holder, lots of gangsta crap but too late to stop what already was picked up by others. His Twitter name is a variant of the N word. Family values? Act like a thug, die like a thug!!!! British press picked up on this and other facts but the castrated, bought out American press is still stirring up racism with their non coverage of the facts; we'll have to wait for justice and the courts to resolve this.

  • brian

Im not sure of Mr zimmermans guilt or not however there is more to this than was originaly reported by all of the media ..there was nothing mentioned of any kind of beating that happend to Mr zimmerman ..all you've heard was that he was guilty and I agree if he shot a young man black or white for no reason he should be fried but that don't seem to be the case ..but that should be up to the police and the judges of that area . As far as al sharpton and Jesse Jackson they spread hate and race more then anyone else its always racism and hate propaganda ..this is just another way for them to get money and there face in front of the camera like when they lead the smear campain over the duke case ..

  • ccw holder

When I took my ccw class my instructor spent a lot of time on the legal ramifications of using a weapon. The stistics he gave was it would cost you at least 125k if you were involved in a situation such as this. Even if you did not shoot someone. It just shows that there is a lot more responsiblity that comes into play when you take a step to be an armed citizen. I think one of the things that woory me is the castle doctrine is a good thing. As long as it is not used in a vigilante way. If Zimmer confrontation was as it was first reported he should be in jail for along time, if he was attacked then was he right? Lets leave it to the cops. I hope Trayvon parents figure away to coup with their lost.

    • gary

There's a lot most of us don't know. The layout of the neighborhood. The progression of the "surveillance".
And especially the chronology of the events. We don't know whether the shooter presented his weapon early as a threat or only after he was on his back getting the crap beat out of him. We don't know if the deceased was trying to get control of that weapon. We don't really know much at all. I tend to feel that the police who took the shooter downtown and interviewed him shortly after the occurrence probably had a much better understanding of what probably happened than any of us, including the preachers.

  • JDGOODGUY

It really is a shame. This should not have happened but it did. Poor judgement on everybodys part led to this terrible incident. But it did happen and now the news has built a great media frenzy. What I want to know is why they are not covering the 8 shootings with 3 murders that have happened this week in our black community? Don't these people diserve justice? OH! My bad, they were just shooting each other. That is not news! Terrible miscarrage of justice.

  • Lili10101

"The President wisely took what I regard as a statesmanlike approach to the issue [identifying with the racist violence of Trayvon by calling him his son], perhaps with a weather eye to the very sort of developments that have come up since he spoke [an intent to rally racist sentiment against evil Whitey]'

The President has revealed his true statesmanship qualities there and on the open microphone proudly announcing that he will deceive the American public on defense matters until he is elected, then he will capitulate to anything Russia wants.

    • Al Brady

Yes, Obama was calculating enough to know anything could still come out about the 'true situation' and saw that no matter what he could grab more good publicity with the 'my son would look like' comments. That is not statesmanship, that is showing care for no aspect of the situation other than what's in it for him. That is grabbing the most mileage from a bad situation. Obama profits on the pain of others. He's been doing that a lot these last few years.

  • brian

Come on the president was only trying to cash in on another vote ..I think that he and congress need to worry about the matters of running our country and let the police and district attorney of that area decide this case hell that's what we pay them for . And come on if anyone else besides Obama would have said that he'd look just like me .. there would be a shit storm about it but not him …sad seem every one trying to cash in on this poor unfortunate situation.. to include his family ..sad trying to profit from your sons death by trade marketing saying so you can market it along with Jesse and al by there side. It sad there will be no justice in this case its now just becoming propaganda

  • Left Coast Chuck

Not ten minutes ago the news reported on two young black men who were murdered last year. They were in their last year of college and would have graduated last June. No gang affiliations, no misdemeanor or felony arrests in their background, no history of confrontations with authority figures. The mother was pleading on television for someone to come forward with information about their murder. The Los Angeles city council, a mostly old white men's organization has posted a $75,000 reward for the information that the bereaved mother is seeking. So my questions are: Where are the marchers? Where are the Revs. Sharpton and Jackson? Where are the Black Panthers? Why haven't they added to the reward? These two young men were a credit to their parents and to black society, so why is there not the anger and the outrage at wasting two young lives for no reason other than they weren't in any gang?

  • Larry Declue

I agree that all the facts are not known and that Martin mave have attacked him. But the bottom line is, Zimmerman got out of the safety of his car, and followed Martin, even after the police dispatcher told him not too. Thus he pressed the engagement. Ask yourself what you would do; you was legally walking down the street when a wildeyed Hispanic confronts you holding a gun. I would be in fear of my life and do everything I could to stop the threat that was confronting me. Zimmerman started the engagement without just cause and then shot the kid after getting his ass kicked.

    • Robert Horst

Larry I agree with you,as a ccw holder since 1973 and a Certified firearms instructor Zimmerman should have stayed in his vehicle until police arrived or should have gone home

    • eZachLeeWright

Don't overplay the fact Zimmerman followed the kid despite the dispatcher's instruction not to. If you decide to pursue a person to see where they go or get the license plate number from a vehicle they leave it you are within your rights. As for asking what I would do, if I were Trayvon Martin I would leave. I would not attack the person following me. This happened in a gated community where Mr. Martin did not live (nor did his father's girlfriend). Was the community fenced? Trayvon may have just been taking a shortcut but did he jump a fence or two to get to where Zimmerman saw him? Most gated communities are fully fenced. There are dimensions to this that good reporting should help with. One certainty is that the "Stand your ground law" is a non factor as Zimmerman's guilt or innocence is the same with or without this law. I simply is not a Stand Your Ground case.

      • eZachLeeWright

Correction to the above: further reading indicates the father's girlfriend lived in a townhouse in the same gated community. If Trayvon Martin walked to the 7-11 without cutting through someone's fenced yard than his stroll was quite legitimate. Seven PM is not even a late stroll. I see no indication he was jumping fences.

  • Al Brady

For not having been there, Larry lost de Clue! You agree that all facts are not yet known, then proceed to muddy the waters even more. Don't be spewing 'facts' that haven't been proven in court. You don't know, Larry, so save your fantacy spewing till all the facts are made plublic. You serve only to obscure the truth!

  • Al Brady

When will Jackson and Sharpton be charged as public nuisances?

  • Rick

Zimmerman's Father was white His Mother was Hispanic. If He's White then so is Obama.

    • Jeepers Creepers

Obama is white and his wife is only 99% pure.

  • 2AKansas

This is nothing but a lose – lose for supporters of 2A and the right to defend one's person, family and property. Was Zimmerman attacked? I believe so. This is supported by his injuries and at least partially by eyewitness accounts. Was Zimmerman in fear for his life? Quite possibly but only two people know for sure and one of them isn't talking. The sad fact is that this could have been avoided if Zimmerman would have not confronted Martin after he notified the police. Zimmerman exercised poor judgement and we're going to pay the price through increased scrutiny of "stand your ground" laws. Zimmerman would have made an excellent witness if the police needed one following Zimmerman's initial report. Zimmerman may avoid a trial but we won't.

    • scout638

It's actually spelled "loss". Mr. Martin had the right to "confront" Mr. Zimmerman on why he was being followed, he had a cell phone, why didn't "HE" call the Police instead of his girlfriend. IF he attacked Zimmerman instead of just talking to him, Zimmerman had a right to defend himself. A lot of "if's"! Let the investigation take it's course! Sounds like you are not going to accept anything short of the death penalty even if he is cleared. As far as "we won't", "It is better to be judged by twelve, than carried by six."

  • OFBG

Here in Albuquerque NM, two young men were murdered in broad daylight a couple of weeks ago. They, and probably their killer(s) are Hispanic (and coincidentally, all wearing "hoodies"). Why no national coverage, no Congressional hearings on their deaths? I think we know the reason. If Sharpton is involved, not only is the Miller case considered racism, but he is using it for political leverage. We are also to question the Florida "stand your ground" law. Here, the killer(s) are probably underage and carrying a concealed handgun, clear violations of both Federal and State law. Why no uproar over that?

  • Eke 817

first of all, get Sharpton and Jackson out of Florida….then let the Grand Jury do their job and either hand down a true bill or call it justified….but until this is settled, just remember to NEVER bring Skittles to a gunfight…

  • Jeepers Creepers

I guess it pays to be slow in the head that way you can get away with murder. The age of both the person doing the shooting and the person that got shot were very close. The body mass of both the people involved was very close. The only difference seems that the person that did the shooting was very slow in the head. He might have been 28 years old but had the mind set of an 9 year old. I doubt very seriously that the shooter had any training on using a firearm. He just wanted one and went out and bought one. With the intent not for protection but to kill something or some one.

  • rgray317

Go to YouTube and type in KKK Founding. Republicans did not start this group as is always spewed all over the media.

  • Trueto You

Jeepers Creepers you are an ignorant putz! You speak of issues of which you know nothing of. The truth will be known in addition to the fact that he did have training on using a firearm. The kid wouldn't be dead if he hadn't. This is a terrible situation that we should all learn from. Lets just keep our mouths shut and ears open until we know ALL of the facts of the case. And YES, get the racist card players(black pussycats, Sharpton and other like-minded off the television and newspapers!

  • RBass

What is being done to Mr. Zimmerman is called " A Newsmedia Lynching".

  • JHarold

Zimmerman shot that Martin as he was being assaulted. Makes no difference if Martin was armed or not. Hell, if he had chocked Z to death or split his skull wide open on the concrete I guess Jackson and Sharpton would be happy. We DO NOT KNOW if Zimmerman confronted Martin or not. What we have been told is that Zimmerman was asaulted by a teenager who was taller and much more aggressive and broke his nose. Despite the media's vomit we have to deal with what we KNOW. Frankly, it's not much but there is nothing to suggest that Zimmerman was gunning for anyone. Hey folks, read the publicized releases of Martin's messages….and tell me this was a sweet young kid.

  • thomas

The media and race card players always riding on the coat tails of foul play but never feel they have to exercise any judgement. The facts can turn things around but can cause chaos to the media. The true facts will prevail
even thought the media and race card players cloud the issues.

The media is just a business, and like any business they goal is to make more and more money. Clearly this is done by bring in more viewers, with news like the death Trayvon Martin; of course concerning the way it happen.

    • Destroy the media

The media in not a business anymore. It's a propaganda tool for the left. This death happened over a month ago but the media was too busy demonizing Conservatives for 'hating' women at that time, so they couldn't shift stories about how a 'poor' black 'child' was just 'murdered' by an evil 'white' guy.

  • Believer

All these yahoos who call black leaders cowards, hypocrites, scum, stupid, whores.. on and on with demeaning and disparaging remarks and then.. saying racism has nothing to do with anything..

The 2nd Amendment community needs to think long and hard before designating Zimmerman as a martyr to the cause. His side of the story is that he was attacked and acted in self defense. However the 911 recording clearly establishes that Martin was leaving the area and Zimmerman started chasing him after being told not to by the dispatcher. Please tell me which CCW class teaches running after suspicious people so you can start an altercation. At the point of the call, according to Zimmerman himself, Martin was not threatening him, not trying to attack anyone else, nor was he cornering Zimmerman. No proper self-defense training would tell Zimmerman to go chasing down someone leaving the area. During that same call, Zimmerman is agitated, complaining about "punks" always getting away and then uttering what sounds like a racial slur under his breath (since his own friends and family have been trying to spin that slur as not being bad, that pretty much convinces me he said it).

Next, as to the struggle, Zimmerman claims to have been beaten and injured enough to require medical attention. However the released surveillance recording of him being brought into the police stations shows no sign of injury, bandaging, or blood, despite his lawyer claiming he suffered a severe cut on his head.

Zimmerman has had previous violent altercations (including with the police).

All of this is public record. Don't believe any media outlet, just listen to the recording and watch the video.

I don't care if Martin was 6'3", wearing a hoodie, and suspended from school for suspected possession of marijuana (ooh, scary). None of that is relevant.

DO NOT MAKE ZIMMERMAN A 2ND AMENDMENT MARTYR!

You just reinforce the anti-gun zeolats' smear campaign against 2A supporters as ignorant racist rednecks. Already the politicians are starting to cave and talk about repealing the stand your ground law. Instead of defending Zimmerman, we should be fighting that, pointing out that what Zimmerman did had nothing to do with that law because he went chasing after the kid.

  • rsk

unfortunately, there are people who refused to let their opinions change because of facts. The facts coming out now are appearing to indicate that Zimmerman, not Martin, was the victim. I realize that in saying this I am being politically incorrect, and I also realize that those who are jumping on the race-baiting bandwagon are not about to back off just because of the actual facts of the case coming out. It will probably always be that way.

  • Go George!

I'm nicknaming my new .40 'Zimmerman' in honor of Mr. Zimmermans's fine markmanship.

  • ex- cop

I think that both James Martinez and Brian H. have some vital points. The race card is always being pulled and I for one am tired of hearing it. I approach people in my life as a Human Being, no matter what their color or religion. How they respond back to me THEN determines how the contact goes. I treat them as a Human Being and I let them decide how they will respond. In other words, if they pull that Black racial crap on me or that Mexican gang banger crap, then they have set the tone for the contact. After that, it's my ballpark.

    • You're no cop

You're also a liar. Every cop I know treats EVERY black male and mexican male like they 1) have commited a crime 2) are commiting a crime, and 3) are about to commit a crime…and that's the black cops who think that way also.

You're no cop, and you have zero credibility.

  • scout638

I have to disagree with Mr. Hunnicut on his description of Mr. Obama as taking a "statesman like approach" on the Tray Martin discussion. When he immediately identifyed with young Mr. Martin as "He could be my son" I would say he already picked a side. As far as the media goes, if Mr. Zimmerman is a "White Latino", will Mr. Obama be a "White African-American" for the election?

  • Fair

It's simple. Zimmerman got out of his car when he was instructed not to. I hope this doesn't mean that the Stand Your Ground law doesn't work unless you're armed. Because Martin stood his ground…and lost his life.

  • Fair

A lot of people are saying Obama is trying to take their guns away. I wanna know has Obama done as president to do so?

This had become such a media drivin and political drivin case that there will be no justice in this case . The racism card is become to damn frequent in the world its always blown out of portion by people like al sharpton and Jesse Jackson they are the reason racism still excit yes there are horrible people in the world that are ignorant and racist but its in my opinion that Jesse and al are the worst hate mongers out there .like the duke case those teens were guilty and ran in the ground by both jersey and al ..for what because some fuel lied and said if happend and of voided she was the one telling the truth cause she was black and they were white rich boys …its sad that the media and people like them can make some one guilty with no hard facts .nor any consequences to them when the hate based redrict the preach is false ..as far as zimmerman j believe he is guilty of being negligent of getting out of his car after being gold not go and he should be charged with that but not murder ..and come on why can't they betray martin for what he was a six foot three young man not a fourteen year old in his football jersey come on ..its all about politics and money now now the unfortunate tragedy

Why is everyone saying Mr. Zimmerman was not arrested when they have the video of him in handcuffs in the police station. Case law is well settled on this matter. If you feel like you are under arrest, then you are in fact under arrest. An arrest has taken place when someone has been deprived of his liberty, such as being placed under restraint or taken into custody. When a suspect is restrained, cuffed, and placed in the back of a police car with no handles on the inside of the door, it's pretty clear he's under arrest.
