U.S. Troops: Can’t Trust ‘Em With Guns?

British newspaper the Telegraph is reporting that U.S. and British troops were ordered to hand over their personal arms before attending a speech by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/afghanistan/9144379/Soldiers-asked-to-disarm-during-Leon-Panetta-speech.html

The British paper quoted Marine Maj. Gen. Mark Gurganus  as saying he gave the order because Afghan troops attending the talk were unarmed and he wanted the policy to be consistent for all.

“You’ve got one of the most important people in the world in the room,” he told the New York Times, “This is not a big deal. I wanted to have the Marines look just like their Afghan partners.”

The Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/15/world/asia/panetta-visits-afghanistan-following-massacre.html?scp=1&sq=Gurganus&st=cse#h[])  quoted Marine Sgt. Maj. Brandon Hall, who told reporters  “All I know is I was told to get the weapons out. Somebody got itchy—that’s all I’ve got to say. Somebody got itchy. We just adjust.”

The Times said Garganus had decided on Tuesday that no one would be armed while Panetta spoke, but that word had not reached those in charge at Camp Leatherneck until shortly before the defense secretary was due to arrive.

Now, I’m not one to draw broad conclusions from one little news story, but in light of the many incidents where Afghan troops and police have killed their U.S. counterparts, and with tensions high after the recent killing of 16 Afghan civilians by an apparently deranged U.S. soldier, Gen. Garganus’ order seems a bit odd.

It may be that Garganus issued the order strictly on his own, and when you are a two-star general, everyone else is going to salute and go carry it out. The general doubtless knows a lot more than the rest of us about the local conditions, and may have had very good reasons for his command.

But when you look at it in the context of Clinton-era rules forbidding troops to be armed on U.S. bases, a lot of gun owners are going to conclude that Democratic politicians don’t trust U.S. service members with guns any more than they trust the rest of us.

Could have something to do with the fact Panetta openly committed treason the other day when he told Congress that the UN had the only say as to how and where our military was used, and that, Congress might be informed, but only if it was ok with the UN. I think Panetta was afraid our soldiers might try to arrest him.

Sorry, I do not agree with you on this one. Would YOU want to go into a room with a armed Afgan after what happened? If the Natives couldn't carry they had to do the same with everyone else so no one was slighted. I have only one question, Shotgun News has the BEST website for gun lovers and hardly any comments, I just don't get it.

    • tommy

hey doug would u lay down your weapon if u were there as a marine, no disrespect just curious

      • Doug

I would hate it. All I was saying is it was probably the pc thing. If I remember right when LBJ went to Nam they did the same thing-and no offence taken tommy, it's good to see some response on these issues.

I can't see disarming any of our military.
They should all be required to carry.
this way, if another Ft. Hood were to occur,
there would be a wall of lead headed toward
      the perpetrator…

    • John

Our guys and gals are over there dying for those people, I don't care much about whose slighted… Rediculous!

  • Rich

IF you have to disarm the men who you lead when in their presence then you're not leading right and you know they know !!!

  • trev

this is nothing new, they've been doing this kind of stuff for VIP's since my dad was in the Fulda Gap

    • John

trev is right this story is just BS.

  • Pfc Snuffy

As a current service member, this is BS. You ask us to fight for your freedom and ask my buddies to die in foreign lands far from home but don't trust us with the weapons you gave us to defend you with? If a officer of any rank asked me to turn in my weapon for any reason I would comply. I'd let my chain of cOmmand know my opinion but ours is not to reason why ours is but to do and die, HOOAH

  • G.Weeks

They took their weapons did they check them for explosives? I've got mixed feelings about this but, with the tension growing as it is with not being able to trust our partners our soldiers should disarm too. I'll keep my weapons and not attend the briefing you guys tell me what he says or I'll read it in the post.

  • W. Gibbs

They were probably afraid some G.I. might honor his oath of alegiance to the constitution, unlike Leon Panetta.
