Hypocrisy in the San Francisco Police Department?

Sometimes the antis make it just too easy, but when the ball’s teed up, you have to lean back and drive it.

San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi has pleaded guilty to a charge of “restraint on liberty.” I personally would regard Mirkarimi’s previous advocacy of strict gun controls as attempted restraint on liberty, but in this case, he was restraining his wife, Venezuelan television actress Eliana Lopez, with enough force to leave a bruise.

Lopez didn’t want to press charges, but an alert neighbor with a video camera gave authorities evidence that couldn’t be ignored.

Those of us who are too simple-minded for politics will remember the many occasions when those who have been accused or convicted of domestic violence were relieved of their guns, but it appears Mirkarimi will be keeping his.

Prosecutors agreed to three years on probation, domestic-violence counseling and 100 hours of community service. He will also pay a $400 fine plus minor court costs.

If you thought shame might come into the picture and the sheriff might just resign, you’d be wrong. “There is nothing constitutional or legally that inhibits my ability to be sheriff,” Mirkarimi said.

While San Francisco mayor Ed Lee could remove him, Mirkarimi’s previous service on the San Francisco Board of Supervisor and his political stature as a founder of the California Green Party made that problematic.

As one seasoned local observer told the Reuters news service, “You don’t make many friends by forcing them to have a tough vote on Ross Mirkarimi. There’s a realpolitik issue, which is that you don’t want to force the board of supervisors to vote on this because you have to get them to approve your budget and a lot of things over the course of the next six months.”

Nice.

  • Heretic

One law for the connected, another law for us. If Mayor Ed Lee doesn't remove him, he's a traitor.

    1) She's hot!
    2) How could he get a mug shot taken with his eyes closed? Don't you need to confirm eye color as part of a description?
    3) Generally speaking, I think that we'd all be better off if Kalifornia just broke off and floated away off into the Pacific.

    • R.W. Hunnicutt

I am a big fan of polka dots myself, when they are used that way. You probably get a eyes-closed mug in Cali to accommodate the medical marijuana user.

I'd like to add to your #3; "and as The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia slides off into the Pacific Ocean it breaks the suction on the Eastern seaboard and several of the Northern states slide off into the Atlantic.

Oh yeah, and Chicago slides off into the Great Lakes!

I was a policeman in San Francisco for 33 years, now I am retired. I stopped Mirkarimi for a traffic infraction when he was a city supervisor. I didn't recognize him. He was polite and never used his office to influence me. As we got talking he seemed very pro police and told me how he had prior law enforcement experience. As we talked further I discovered he was a current sitting city supervisor. I let him off with a warning. He asked me why I was letting him off, I explained to him that the bottom line was it was not a good idea to cite a city politician for a minor traffic infraction (equipment) and that I am sure he would attend to it. We parted by shaking hands and he thanked me for being understanding. As he advanced through city politics he was the biggest critic of the police dept., and the least understanding of it. He was never an active duty policeman but held a limited role as a quasi district attorneys office investigator. I realized he was a want to be police man and a leftist progressive politician who speaks out of both sides of his mouth. My opinion of him today after this incident is he is a big phony and can not be trusted to do the right thing.

Hmmm. I guess that means he would fail a background check if he chose to purchase a firearm.

My cousin in San Jose says:

It’s been big news here. But the wife did want him arrested – at first. The wife went to various neighbors on several separate occasions showing them bruises and marks and claiming that he threatened her when she told him she wanted to return to her homeland to visit her relatives and take their little boy with her. He told her he’d be keeping the child and threatened to have her deported if she tried to go with the child and that she’d never see the child again because he was powerful and knew people.

Apparently there was a huge argument on New Year’s Day when she again said she missed her relatives (they’ve never seen her child) and she fled the house and showed the neighbors how he twisted her arm, bruised her, etc. She was hysterical and one neighbor videotaped her saying what he’d done as well as all the marks and called 911 while she remained with the neighbors protecting her. Later on when he was put on leave, she changed her mind and claimed nothing happened BUT there was that pesky video of her saying all kinds of things he supposedly has done to her over the past few years.

As well his two former girlfriends came forward and said he’d beaten them up before and threatened them. And he is STILL THE SHERIFF in charge of all those men in jail charged with the same thing!

  • Daryl

If he was a regular deputy he would have been fired immediately and lost his weapon. I'm sure the prosecutor worked out a deal where he won't lose his rights or have this arrest on his record. Another great politician. Is his wife here illegally? That needs to be looked into by the press, no police agency will look into it. Why aren't the citizens of San Francisco demanding that he be fired?

    • Al Brady

No, Daryl, his WIFE is quite legal as being married to a US citizen. If; however, he were to divorce her and she'd been married to him less than three years …. by by! The mayor can't do much about removing an elected COUNTY sheriff. But, the mayor sure could have him arrested and charged by the city police! Politicians believe they're above the law. The Peoples Republic of California proves it true!

  • Pat Simpson

For those of you who are unaware of the fact the San Francisco Sheriff's Depoartment is separate from the Police Department. This guy is the Sheriff, he is only in charge of the jail, process servers, and court house bailiffs. They do not do patrol or law enforcement work. Yes, there is a lot of hypocrisy in San Francisco, but this time its not in the Police Department.

    • Al Brady

Actually, Pat, a sheriff has more authority within his county than any other law enforcement agency!

  • Al Brady

Any infraction that would cost a citizen his 2d Amendment rights should cost any official of any level of government the same and greater!

  • Not me!

If this yo-yo carries or in any way possesses a gun the offense is FEDERAL not STATE.

  • mikkidog

The Sheriff is ELECTED. It is typical of the liberal voters in San Francisco to vote for someone who has liberal views. Their ideology has nothing to do with reality. Legality does not mean anything to someone who furthers their agenda. Virtually all of Kalfornia is infested with politicians with NO INTEGRITY because of this. They are elected on what they SAY, not what they DO. It is disgusting that the SHERIFF OF SAN FRANSISCO COUNTY can commit assault and battery, and retain office, much less avoid STATE PRISON!

    • Vann Morrison

San Francisco, Isn't that where Pelosi, Feinstein and Boxer are from?

  • Joe

Sort of like Sean Penn. He committed domestic violence against his wife at the time, Madonna. Pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence. Later he was photoed cruising in a boat post Katerina with a shotgun in his hands. Obvious violation of Federal Gun Law!

    • ron ryan justice

No federal law is for when u have a domestic currently on your record. Not if you or he Sean Penn had the case expunged after probation was compleate. and such is easy to do. when its expunged its removed and your rights are restored. Many states have there own version of that Californias is expungement. Some states have a deffered finding ( i know Virginia is one) where if after probation is up the change the plea to not guilty and your rights are restored. Again these may only be for not so serious domestic crimes becase if it was very bad the judge wouldn't even agree to a deferred finding or may say no at the expungement. But anyway I'm sure Sean penns was expunged and his rights restored.

  • Wayne

The Left-leaning folks of San Francisco are only following the example of they're leader in the White House.

    • Al Brady

It's not called the left coast for no reason, Wayne!

  • Trojan al

Anyone convicted of Domestic Violence is no longer able to carry a firearm within the State of CA. In as much as the Sheriff is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the County he can no longer serve as Sheriff. Part of the basic requirements of the job is the ability to lawfully carry a side arm. Since he can no longer do so he must be terminated from his job.

The big question in San Francisco is, are liberals forced to live within the same laws as the rest of us or do they get a pass as usual? You see what happens when ultra left liberals are in charge.

  • yearight

What the hell is such a hottie doing with that dweeb in the first place. The guy should be tossed out of office and put in jail but as usual crooked politics comes first just like it is all the way up to the damn whitehouse and our traitor president
