One for you 9mm haters

A New York police officer apparently was saved by a magazine on his belt when a criminal fired on him with a 9mm pistol.

The New York Post referred to it as a “bullet pouch,” but Police Commissioner Ray Kelly used correct terminology when he said “the magazine may well have saved his life.”

The officer and a partner returned fired and chased the criminal, who ditched his Taurus autoloader in a trash compactor. His blood trail was followed to a nearby housing project, where he was captured.

Detractors of the 9mm will chalk this up as more evidence the caliber won’t get it done, while supporters will identify it as the exception that proves the rule.

I remember reading a story from WWII during the invasion of Normandy; where a GI was shot and went down. Funny thing is that his fine, no holes in him; then he looked at his M1 Grand and saw that the round hit the rifle with a full magazine and didn’t go any further. Now if a 8mm Mauser couldn’t do this with all 2,493 foot-pounds how could a 9mm do almost the same thing as this story tells. I wouldn’t think any handgun round could either

I was just reading yesterday that, during WW1, German soldiers would get into Allied trenches and shoot American soldiers with their Lugers. The American soldiers would get very cross about it, pull out their 1911s, kill the Germans, then walk to an aid station.
Now don't get me wrong, I like 9mm's. I'm going to get one for my little girl.(she's 9)

Just a note from a physican working the emergency room at a trauma center. By far the majority of gunshot wounds are of the 9mm and 38 cal variety. Most of the fatalities are from these calibers. I have also seen many 22 cal and only a rare 40 plus cal. shootings. I would say that 99% of the gunshot fatalities are from the 9mm group. It all goes to shot placement. and to be perfectly honest . I wouldnt want to be shot with any of the above

9mm are fairly in expensive rounds and almost all dealers carry a bulk of them also the 9mm handguns are less expensive than the larger calibers so if u flood the streets with 22's what do you think will happen when criminals get they're hands on them even a college educated man can figure this one out

9mm was the creme de le creme back in 1986 when Glock first came to market. It started the war between Glock and Smith and Wesson, making the 9mm the "antagonist." S&W went through great lengths to bad mouth the Glock (and 9mm) simply because the EVERY police agency switched to Glock after the Miami masacre- swirling S&W into bankruptcy. Focused around the ridiculous stopping power lore of the 9mm-S&W raced to create and trademark.. wait for it… you guessed it… the ultimiate compromise… the .40 S&W (However Glock still beat them to production with the Glock 22). The moral of the story is this- EVERY military in the world, including our own along with EVERY LE agencny in the world, with the exception of ours- uses the 9mm. That says it all- really.

The .40 S&W is a product of marketing to our fears that a 9mm is not enough- its that simple. True- the physics behind them are just that- etched in, well- physics. It's true- more power, bigger bullet equals more teminal force. No argument there- its Newtons law. However, stopping power is a farce, only relative to the .38 Special back in 1901 when the Army tried to replace it. Other than that, it's a farce- a 9mm is EASILY enough force to stop a human and theat argument never existed before 1988 when Glock defeated S&W for the market of US law enforcment.

Recently in Philadelphia, the police shot an intruder in the chest at the range of about 15 feet with two rounds of .45ACP, when he kept coming, he was tasered by another officer.
He ultimately died, but this and many other such incidents just go to show that the "legend" of the .45 being the top of the chain is BS mostly passed on by 1911 snobs.

Modern 9mm ammo is not something I'd want to take a few of in the chest.

Seems the police in Philadelphia are only issued 2 rounds, or the training they receive on stopping a threat is lacking in this instance. The chest area on some can be pretty big.
Shot placement is more critical than any caliber, however, you mention nothing about the mental/ physical condition of the perp.
Back to the officer, hope he/she is ok with killing this piece of trash, and may he/she recieve better training with the firearm.

There is a study that was performed a while ago(when pigs were allowed to be shot to test ammo) where they shot one round into the torso of a pig and waited to see if they would die. 357 mag and 45acp were one shot kills 97% of the time. 9mm was somewhere around 60%. http://www.angelfire.com/art/enchanter/pigboard.h…

well in my book any gun will kill, if you know how to use it.
90% of gun owners don't know how to shoot appropriately. my German grand parents kill lots of Brits
and Americans with 9mm from close and far.
and also lots of Jewish lads from one meter away.
the problem is that it is disgusting the smell of blood and particles of brains in your nose.

i was reading where they were having a 1911 convention, average age is 90. Try n tell em, it really aint got nada on a 9, wont penetrate through cardboard, n dont hold any rounds, but they like their 80 pound jamomatics, infact colt gives senior citizen discounts on 1911 purchases most places. old people and their 45s. How cute.
