Shocker: Chicago Mayor Calls for Registration

If you thought Chicago might be out of the gun control business thanks to the retirement of former mayor Richard M. Daley and the city’s loss of the McDonald case, you’d be wrong.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, former White House Chief of Staff and confidant of the president, today called for legislation establishing a Chicago-style handgun registration regime for the rest of Illinois.

The chance of such a measure passing is remote, since Downstate Democrats and Republicans alike will line up against it, but it puts Chicago on offense at a time when many in Illinois want to change its status as the last state with no provision for concealed carry. I suspect the main purpose of the registration scheme is to blunt progress toward carry legislation.

Following U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder’s admission that the Administration retained the determination to pursue “assault weapon” legislation, Emanuel’s call would seem to indicate a willingness among top Democrats to bring up an issue they’ve spent three years tamping down. Rural Democrat officeholders would no doubt prefer they keep it on the q.t.

    Raum said something to this effect when talking about this: "I'm not asking you to participate in anything you aren't already doing; you register a car, etc. so why not a gun?" paraphrased with some bias (though not a lot).

    Something we aren't already doing? yeah…this is ridiculous. Convince us that this is necessary by telling us you want to charge us a fee to do something we are guaranteed by the Constitution to never have to do. Really convincing. You guys are almost as conservative as Kalifornia…but not quite.

      gentlemen CANADA adopted a gun registry what go does it do to have a gun registerd .nothing you could own a gun for 20 years and then all of a sudden you reach your bracking point and go coocoo! and shoot someone out of madness .will registering you guns prevent you from comithing such acts NO.NO.NO.NO canadas GUN REGISTRY IS A REAL SEWER TANK have your members of congress look at CANADAS mistakes before they pass law!!!!!!!!

      you register your car for ownership and insurance purposes, BUT THE GOVERNMENT HAS NO INTEREST IN CONFISCATING YOUR CAR unlike a 'registered gun.

    you know i am watching the history chanel at the moment on how the states got their shapes. the name chicago according to the american indians ment " stinking swamp" and because of a buntch of creedy bastards the state of illinois conned the goverment in exstending the northern border to take in this swamp area at the tip of lake michigan to make money. they put in a water way to connect a small river to the illinois river which was connected to the swamp call chicago which then made it possible to get to lake michigan. to make a long story short should have left the freaking swamp alone. thus eleviating our current proplem Chicago, cook county and of course the mayor emanuel and the biggest problem ever our current president…..
