I just purchased this gun Friday for my son at Christmas. I am not sure I have made the right decision based on the price of the ammo. I went to my gun store with the intention of purchasing the S&W Ar 15 223 but they were out of stock and said they could order me one and it would arrive before Christmas. Then the owner of the gun store approached me with the new S&W 300 Whisper and said this is the newest thing out. After contemplating I decided to purchase. I paid 28.00 bucks for a box of shells (300 AAC Blackout). Can someone please tell me I made the right purchase lol.

I would love to purchase the rifle from you. I will gladly pay the high price of the ammo

You absolutely made the right choice ! This rifle can do the job of hunting and target work . Your son can fire subsonic rounds with no more sound than a 22 lr. or use 125 gr high performance rounds. I suggest a great hobby to start with your son. Try reloading , tinkering with various loads and powders to find what shoots best in the gun will be a great hobby and save you tons of money. Start saving your brass now.
      Good luck

Yes 300 Black out will work in the weapon you purchase, there is so little difference between the two it would be very hard to tell if the cases were not marked. On the Smith and Wesson website they state it can fire either round.

Appreciate the feedback. I must tell you though that Christmas day we went and shot the 300 whisper. We had 4 boxes of the Remington 300 AAC blackout 220 grain and 1 box of Hornady 110 grain supersonic. I must report that the gun jammed after 3 shots with the blackout cartridge. From then on it would not cycle the 300 blackout with out jamming. After removal of each of the jammed cartridges there was a definite dent at the neck of each shell. After the frustration of removing jam after jam we decided to shoot the supersonic Hornady and the gun fired very smoooth and reliable without a glitch. We took the gun back to the gun shop where Santa purchased it and let them know the problem. They broke the gun down, cleaned it and re-lubricated it and sent us back to the range. This helped quite a bit but the 300 blackout still jammed after the first 4 or 5 rounds were fired. Took the gun back to gun store and they sent it off to S&W. Will respond back after I hear their resolution to the problem.

The subsonic rounds are made to work with a suppressor. Without a suppressor, there may not be enough back pressure to cycle the weapon. I would break it in good using supersonic loads then try the subs and see if once it has loosened up a bit they will work.

Its probably not going to cycle subsonic ammo without a silencer attached. 300aac / blackout is a cool round but mainly because I have a 762-SDN-6 silencer to put on it. Your Christmas present needs a 1000$ accessory with a 5+ month wait on it. I say take it back and pick the kid up a 22lr AR 15 and if you want a silencer get a 22lr Ss Sparrow. Just as much fun and 22$ buys 500-1000 rounds of ammo.

Thanks. The "kid" is 21. I just hope S&W can fix the problem without having to suppress the gun like it is advertised. Hopefully they will get the gun back to us soon. He is ready to pop some hogs with his buddies.

How well will the gun work hunting deer and hog?

There are 3 ways to deal with the cycling issue on an unsuppressed Whisper/Blackout.
    1. Pull the weights out of the buffer so there is less resistance to cycling. This is the easiest but may cause issues when firing the 110gr. Supersonics as the buffer may bottom out hard which can be hard on the rifle.
    2. Replace the gas block with an adjustable one and bore out the gas port. This allows you to adjust for the different rounds. Requires a gunsmith unless you have the tools to do it yourself.
    3. Load your own, which is what I do. 11.8gr of Accurate 1680 yields the magic ~1050fps, burns clean and cycles like a dream. Your results may vary as there are several factors that make a difference.

Or, you can just get the suppressor like it was designed for.

Umm… I have one question: Why this rare and expensive and not the same gun in .308?
