Who’s Your Favorite Screen Sergeant?

R. Lee Ermey has parlayed his role as Sgt. Hartman in the 1987 movieĀ Full Metal Jacket into a long career as cable TV host and pitchman for, notably, Glock. Here are some other memorable hard-assed sergeants from cinema history. Here are nine we’ve chosen. Who’s your choice (other than Ermey) to fill out the Top 10?

All Quiet on the Western Front: (1930) John Wray as Sgt. Himmelstoss

Beau Geste: (1939) Brian Donlevy as Sgt. Markoff

Sands of Iwo Jima: (1949) John Wayne as Sgt. Stryker

Take the High Ground: (1953) Richard Widmark as Sgt. Ryan

Officer and a Gentleman: (1982) Lou Gossett as Sgt. Foley

Sgt. Rock, Easy Company … Okay, so I cheated bit, but in the comics, many of us were first introduced in an intimate way over an extended period of time to Army sergeants back in the 50's & 60's.

Lots of kudos should be for Sgt. Audie Murphy. Just don't see too many true heroes like him on film, especially anyone awarded the Medal of Honor.

    Here's his bio: http://www.fortsillsamc.4t.com/catalog.html

  36. john

  37. tpick

  38. Al Quick

I joined the Marine Corps in 1965 just before the Viet Nam build up and the reorganizing of the military. We still had WWII Sgt's and even some old China Marines. John Wayne in Sands of Iwo Jima protrayed these old timers to a tee.

  39. Sergeant Schultz (Hogans Heroes) :)

  40. Ornery

SSGT Clyde Bell, USA…He was never in the movies, but he was one of the best damn Sgt.'s that ever wore a flat hat.
