Second City Nose-Thumbing Derided

First, Chicago’s handgun ban was struck down in the McDonald decision. The city council grudgingly accepted that, but tried to make life as hard as possible for gun owners by requiring firearms training but forbidding ranges within the city limits. That law was struck down this week in the Ezell decision. Undeterred, Chicago’s famously corrupt local government has issued a series of regulations for shooting ranges that bring to mind  the literacy tests used to deny blacks voting rights in the Jim Crow South. It’s all too much for even a liberal Chicago Tribune columnist:

Help! I am being held prisoner in the Peoples Republic of Illinois. My sons in the Marine Corps can't go shooting with me because they do not have current FOID cards. They can't get them because their IL drivers licences have expired. They can defend us all over the world but The Peoples Republic wont trust them!

And this is why my family and I avoid Ilinois in its entirety when travelling from Texas to Michigan and back.

    B Mahoney,

Not sure what's keeping you from taking your sons shooting. I used to take my sons to the range all the time – before they were even old enough to have driver's licenses. They didn't have FOID cards at the time either, and didn't need them, as they weren't the "owner" of the firearm, being well under 18/21.

I think I'd check out a different range; I take folks all the time shooting at ranges in IL, and the folks don't have FOID cards as they're not "into" shooting yet. Not a problem, as long as I have mine.

I suspect your rangemaster isn't up on what is really required.
